Half life 2 activation sucks!

Thursday, January 12, 2006

Now I know as soon as you read the title of this post, you are probably wondering what do ultra geeks like me who deal with stuff like parsers, lexers and eclipse ides have to do with gaming.

Well it turns out that I love playing video games and of course for anyone who likes video games and first person shooters its a duty to play half life 2.

So well I went and got myself a copy of the game. I had heard that half life has this 'steam' thing which requires you to connect to the internet the first time to authenticate your game. So well, I install the game and then steam pops up saying it will take 4 hours to update!!! Well, in india you dont have the fast broadband connections of US. So anyway I leave my computer for a while and go to sleep.

When I wake up I see that the update has completed and now I need to enter my cd key to activate the game. So I type away the key, looking forward to shooting some aliens very soon.

But thats when the sh*t hits the fan! It says the cd key is already in use by some other steam account!! What the f***k!!! This is the original game and I have input the cd key that came with it and now it tells me that its invalid!!!
This is the worst f*cking form of authentication I have seen.

I even sent a mail to their support, but today after 3 days I still havent got a reply! I absolutely swear never to purchase any game which uses the f*cking 'steam' from now on!!!

As for the game, I eventually borrowed a steam account from a friend whose key somehow worked and managed to play the game.
But it still sucks on Steam's part that I cant play the game with the key provided with my original cd.

Oh btw, the game rocks! ;)

That usually happens when someone buys the game, registers the cd key and then returns it to the store, and then you buy it as a brand new game... take it back to the store and ask for a replacement.

Well actually the game was out of stock in my city so I asked a friend of mine who lives in a different city to buy and mail me the game.

It would be quite a hassle to mail it back and ask him to return it. Also the store may not accept it cause the package is open.

But anyway I have managed to complete the game using his steam account :)

I went thru the same BS. Steam sucks. Don't by their games.

Same here, STEAM YOU SUCK!! I will NEVER buy another steam probuct. I dont know alot about thease PC games and I,m not sure if IPS dependant games are the norm for PC's. But nowhare on the package dose it say you need an Internet connection to play the game, Dont you think when you buy a product you should be able to use that product Immeatley? How do you think peeps would take it if they bought a PS2 or Xbox game and couldnt play it? WTF!! Steam you should expect alot of leagle problems in your future

i'll never buy a steam game again

Hehe, losers. Swearing never to buy another steam game really limits your range of kickass games on the market right now.

Once the game is installed every few months you have to wait before you play because steam wants to do this or that, it relly blows man

couldn't agree more, they suck - i just sent them this
subject: shaderapidx9.dll crashes half life 2

i installed half life 2 a couple of months ago, played it few than a dozen times and not for longer than a few minutes, the last time was 3 or 4 weeks ago, but after an automatic update when i started steam a few days ago (which i couldn’t disable) to the steam software half life 2 failed to launch and crashed with an error in shaderapidx9.dll

i have read and tried everything possible without resolution, including updating the graphics card and direct x drivers, windows update, virus and malware scanning, trying different various half-life 2 launch options, reinstalling half life 2 (which then stupidly started the auto-update process without asking me if i want to try the default installed version of steam/hl2), restoring from a game backup…

i’m getting very angry with this steam system and how it runs all these bandwidth sucknig updates and upgrades even when “no upgrade” is set.

i’ve tried attaching the various text files asked of in the support pages but the upload doesn’t work, it just hangs the browser - i can send this by email if thats an option. i just want this damn game that i’ve spend my hard-earned cash on to work.

i have many other pc games from other software makers which run 100% of the time. i’m seriously considering blacklisting your software label and telling all my friends to avoid ever buying anything from your label again. i feel like i’ve been robbed.

I have the same problem with this shaderapidx9.dll I'm sick of it. I can play HL2 but not CS:S.

Couple months late...
But yea same BS here.

HL1 GOTY Edition
Bought it brand new off the shelf years ago, haven't used it on steam once...

Finally get around to replaying the game after my gaming pc died.

Get the "Duplicated Key" message..
Can't play it online now.

Steam really need to straighten it's sh*t out!

Steam is actually a very ingenious online device created by Valve, you idiots. Steam isn't a company.

If you dumbasses weren't so unimaginably stupid then you might be able to grasp the concept.

I hate steam!!! Have Got half life 2 - validation code invalid etc!!! All thoses people supporting the steam concept either are the w**kers who made it, or are currently sucking the b**ls of the w**kers who made it! NO SENSIBLE person would support such a sh*t concept as "to protect our vast profits we will design a concept that will irrate our customers"
I'm not ever getting any game that has steam on it - may the invernters of it be impaled by a rusty wooden spike - may supporters of it get herpes from sucking the b**ls of the fu**ers who invented steam!!!

Yup, bought brand new and sealed Half Life 2 dvd. took it home, thought cool, here we go. set up steam account, then waited for hours.....and hours for updates to download...getting about 30kps on an 8 mbs line, then finally it tells me my brand new never been opened cd key is already registered, and that I can send a cheque for 10 bucks for a new one. I dont live in the US so this seemed a bit crap. Emailed their customer service address 9 days ago...no reply. Now realise this is a common problem with valve/steam. Paid £32.97 for this. Have now put my fist through the dvd and binned it. I will not be purchasing any valvee or steam authorisation based game again.absolute shite service.

I just bought a copy of hl2 off amazon used, it's going to be shipped monday. This was before i found out about steam.. though from what i'm hearing, i may have had the same problem even if i bought it new. But what's interesting is that the last guy said he was given an option to buy a new key for '10 bucks'. This dont seem like such a bad deal... unless he meant £10. Anyone know anything about this?

Peter

see http://korturl.dk/EyDm0 (steams help page)for further info. 10$ is price if you dont have original reciept or game was purchased over internet. still seems a complicated and expensive way to get a cd key which you have already paid for with the game in the first place.

Well if anyone was curious, the game came a few days later. The box looked like crap, but the discs were in excellent shape, and best of all, the reg key actually worked. From all I've heard about steam and activation, I was debating even trying to install the game. Glad I did, it kicks ass.
